There is a version of a man's wardrobe that gets more interesting the longer you look at it. None of the pieces are loud. None of them are new. All of them are replaceable, and none of them need to be.
§01The list
A navy unstructured blazer, in a wool-linen blend, with patch pockets. A pair of off-white cotton trousers, slightly cropped, with a flat front. Two white T-shirts, one heavier, one finer. One black merino crewneck, slightly oversized. A pair of dark indigo jeans, raw selvedge if your budget allows.
Brown leather loafers, slightly broken-in. A single-breasted mac in stone. One good white Oxford shirt. A grey sweatshirt that you wear three days a week. A black leather belt that lasts ten years.
That's it. That's the wardrobe. Everything else is variation on a theme, and the theme is restraint.
"The piece you come back for in two weeks is the piece worth buying."
